Ice Stupas – Conserving Water for Baltistan
To combat water scarcity during the critical early agricultural season, the Baltistan Culture & Development Foundation has constructed six Ice Stupas across six local villages. These innovative structures act as winter reservoirs, capturing and freezing water that would otherwise run off.
As temperatures rise in early spring, the stupas melt, providing a consistent supply of water for irrigation and domestic use. By blending traditional wisdom with modern engineering, we are helping farmers diversify their crops and achieve two harvests per year—turning climate challenges into sustainable growth.

BCDF and Neela Asmaan Sign MOU to Preserve Baltistan’s Cultural Heritage
Today marks a significant milestone as Baltistan Culture & Development Foundation (BCDF) and Neela Asmaan officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), strengthening a shared vision for collaboration and cultural preservation. The MOU signing ceremony was held at BCDF Office, Abdullah Karim Hall, in a formal and impactful gathering. The agreement was signed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Nazir Ahmed, representing their respective organizations. This strategic partnership aims to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Baltistan by identifying, documenting, and recording its diverse cultural stories.

Tower of Hope – Ice Stupa Initiative by BCDF In the face of growing water scarcity and climate challenges in Baltistan, the Baltistan Culture and Development Foundation (BCDF) continues to promote innovative, community-based solutions. The Tower of Hope – Ice Stupa stands as a remarkable example of resilience and indigenous knowledge in action. The Ice Stupa is an artificial glacier, carefully constructed during winter by channeling water into freezing temperatures, forming a مخروطی (conical) structure of ice. This stored water gradually melts in spring and summer, providing a reliable water source for irrigation and local communities when it is needed the most. This initiative reflects BCDF’s commitment to climate resilience, sustainable resource management, and community empowerment. Local community members, including women, actively participated in the process— supporting construction, and ensuring the success of the project in challenging terrains. The Tower of Hope is not just an environmental solution—it is a symbol of collective effort, sustainability, and a brighter future for mountain communities. Together, we build resilience. CHILDREN OF ICE (Glacier Grafting)
Children of Ice is a compelling short documentary centered on a family’s struggle for water, capturing the intersection of environmental fragility and human endurance in the Baltistan region, situated between the Himalayas and the Karakoram ranges. The film precisely details how the next generation navigates systemic resource scarcity and climate change while highlighting the revival of Gang Khswa—an ancient indigenous practice of glacier grafting—as a testament to the community's proactive fight against poverty and water insecurity. Ultimately, this traditional Nature-based Solution (NbS) serves as both a powerful tribute to the resilience of youth and an urgent global call to support remote mountain communities. This documentary was produced by 4K Films under the project Harnessing Indigenous Knowledge for Water Management in Baltistan: The Role of Frozen Water Reserves, with funding provided by the FCDO through Oxfort Policy Management (OPM) Islamabad.
Glacier Grafting (Gang Khswa)– Ancient Tradition of Baltistan

This work represents one of the most meaningful efforts to revive, preserve, and promote our ancestors’ knowledge and wisdom. Glacier grafting is not only an environmental technique but a tradition deeply rooted in the wisdom of our ancestors, who understood the mountains better than anyone.
